Swedish Perspectives on Industrial Policy, the Washington Consensus and Beyond, the thirteenth edition of Swedish Economic Forum Report will be launched on 17 November.

Many economies were already before the pandemic facing considerable structural reform due to global mega trends such as globalization, technological change and urbanisation. Previously, a set of ten economic policy prescriptions or a “standard” reform package developed by IMF and World Bank among others, was used for countries in need of structural reform. Despite its prominent role, there is not consensus as to what exactly comprises industrial policy or how effective industrial policies are in promoting economic development. What is needed today? Is industrial policy a way forward?

Discussion will address:

• The renewed interest for and development of industrial policy – what do we know about the effects of industrial policy?
• Is the policy prescription from Washington consensus adapted to current economic challenges?
• How can a small open economy such as Sweden address structural problems and the changes within the business sector?

The launch is held as a hybrid meeting at IVA in Stockholm. It is possible to participate in person as well as online.
